Richmond sits in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, roughly nine miles southwest of central London, where the river curves past Kew and Twickenham. Richmond Park borders the town to the south, with Ham House and Kew Gardens both within easy reach.
The meandering stretch of the Thames around Richmond is one of London’s prettiest.
Add the city’s largest Royal Park, sweeping views over the Thames basin and historic houses at every turn, and it is easy to see the appeal.
It all started with a Royal Palace, built by Henry VII and a favourite haunt of Elizabeth I, which slowly grew to take in the riverside and the parkland beyond. Richmond has expanded considerably since, but it has kept an aura of exclusivity, helped along by grand Georgian houses and some of the highest property prices in London.
Today it is a pleasing mix of riverside pubs, National Trust houses and walks that reward with magnificent views, down over the Thames basin and, thanks to one of the city’s protected sightlines, all the way to St Paul’s.
