Earl’s Court sits within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, with West Brompton and West Kensington close by and the SW5 postcode covering much of the area.
Squeezed between Kensington and Fulham, Earl’s Court has always been a place where different worlds mix, and it’s still true today.
Walk along one of its bustling high streets and you’ll hear a dozen languages before you reach the end of it.
Earl’s Court hasn’t always painted such a happy picture. In the Victorian age it was known for pleasure gardens with a genuinely dangerous edge, complete with prostitution, brawls and wild performances (Buffalo Bill once put on a show here). They were eventually shut down for “immorality”, replaced by an exhibition centre that defined the area until its closure in 2014.
These days it’s a mix of local community and London polish, blue plaques included: both Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie once lived here.
