Rotherhithe has a long history as a port, dating back to Elizabethan times, with working shipyards that lasted into the 20th century. The docks themselves closed in the 1970s, and redevelopment through the 1980s brought housing and warehouses, some of which are now genuinely good bars and pubs.
Every corner still carries a reminder of its docking past, just with rather less industry involved these days.
