Time Out Market is finally coming to London, the city where it all began

Time Out has opened food markets in 13 cities around the world since 2014. The one city that’s never had one is the city the company was actually founded in, until now.

Time Out Group has confirmed a long-term partnership with The Crown Estate to open its first-ever London Time Out Market, landing at 10 Piccadilly in summer 2028. The building, better known to longtime Londoners as the old Tower Records site, sits right at the junction of Regent Street, Piccadilly and Piccadilly Circus, one of the highest-footfall spots in Europe, with around 74 million visitors passing through Regent Street each year.

What to expect

The Market will span more than 26,400 square feet across three floors, with around 15 restaurants, bars and food businesses curated by Time Out’s own local editorial team, the same approach used across its existing sites in Lisbon, New York, Chicago and Osaka.

Beyond the food, expect a genuine cultural programme too: live music, performances and talks are all part of the plan, alongside what Time Out describes as space for experiential retail and sponsorship activity. The project is also being built with sustainability commitments attached, energy-efficient systems, food waste reduction and a focus on sourcing locally where possible, and is expected to create around 130 local jobs.

Why this one matters

Time Out was founded in London in 1968, and this will be the company’s first Market in its home city, and its new global flagship, overtaking the Lisbon original as the flagship site. By the time it opens, it’s expected to be the 18th or 19th Time Out Market worldwide, part of a portfolio that now welcomes more than 12 million visitors a year across four continents.

“Securing this partnership with The Crown Estate to create our global flagship in the heart of Piccadilly Circus is one of the most significant milestones in Time Out’s nearly 60-year history,” said Chris Ohlund, chief executive of Time Out Group.

The London x London Take: London was arguably the most obvious city missing from the Time Out Market map, and Piccadilly Circus is about as bold a location as the company could have picked for it. Two years is a long wait, but a flagship site of this scale, in this location, backed by a curatorial team that actually knows the city, is worth the patience.
