Champor-Champor, London Bridge: the Thai-Malay restaurant that turns dinner into a total dining experience

This quirky spot describes itself as “a total dining experience.” We’re happy to report it’s not just a marketing slogan.

Champor-Champor sits on a quiet stretch of Weston Street, tucked behind Guy’s Hospital, close enough to London Bridge and the Shard to feel central but far enough off the main drag that it still gets described as a hidden find, even now, with the Shard looming just around the corner. In Malay, “champor-champor” translates loosely as “mix and match”, and it’s a fitting name for both the interior and the menu.

Walk in and the decor does a lot of the talking before the food arrives: walls painted in vibrant shades, colourful masks on display, carved teak throughout, candles casting a warm glow over the whole room in the evenings, and acres of Thai silk. It’s cosy, chic and unmistakably bohemian, the kind of room that could feel like a gimmick in less capable hands but here just feels considered, built up over years by owners who clearly know exactly the atmosphere they’re going for.

The cooking draws on both Thai and Malaysian traditions, layered, spice-forward dishes that rarely turn up together on the same menu elsewhere in SE1. Beef rendang is a signature for good reason, slow and deeply savoury, and the sizzling beef sirloin steak brings genuine table theatre alongside the flavour. The kitchen also caters properly to vegans, vegetarians and coeliac diners, with halal options available on pre-order, a level of thought that a lot of restaurants this distinctive don’t always bother with.

This isn’t a restaurant for purists looking for a strictly regional menu, the mix of Thai and Malay influences runs through the food, the wine list and even the music, and that’s very much the point. The result works because it’s confident rather than confused, dishes that borrow from two traditions and land somewhere genuinely their own.

Booking ahead is a good idea. The room is small, and given how long Champor-Champor has held onto its following, walk-ins carry real risk, particularly on weekends. This is also a restaurant that rewards taking your time, the pacing suits a proper dinner rather than a rushed pre-theatre bite, so build in the evening for it rather than squeezing it into a tight window.

The London x London Take: Champor-Champor has been quietly doing its own thing on Weston Street for years, and the fact that it still gets called a hidden find, even with the Shard now looming over it, says a lot about how little it’s needed to change to stay good. Distinctive decor, confident cross-cultural cooking, and genuinely thoughtful dietary options. Book ahead and give it the evening it deserves.
