London’s strangest place name belongs to one of its fastest-changing neighbourhoods, and it deserves better than its reputation as a boring corner of the city.
The area takes its name from an old coach house that once stood here, decorated with a model elephant and castle you can still find if you know where to look.
Elephant and Castle is probably best known historically as the area where Charlie Chaplin grew up. Not so long ago it was little more than an intersection of major London roads, but a wave of urban renewal has shifted perceptions of the area from South to genuinely central London.
It’s one of the city’s more interesting works in progress.
