Negroni Week is a week. In London it has quietly become a month, and there is a passport involved: collect a stamp at six bars across Hackney, Soho, Brick Lane, Stoke Newington and Nine Elms and the sixth Negroni is free.
Campari has stretched the whole thing across September, running to Sunday 27th, which is also the last day of Negroni Week proper. That runs 21 to 27 September and raises money for Slow Food. Everything below sits inside the month, not just the week, so there is no rush to cram it into seven days.
The passport, and where it takes you
Six venues have been turned into Negroni lounges for the month, and the passport is the reason to treat them as a set rather than a list: Lardo in Hackney, Equal Parts in Hackney, Café 1001 on Brick Lane, Next Door Records Two in Stoke Newington, The Shaston Arms in Soho and Bar Brasso in Nine Elms. Work through all six and the last one is on the house.
It is a well-drawn route, as it happens. Five of the six sit in a rough arc across east and north-east London, so three of them in an afternoon is a realistic ambition and Nine Elms is the one you make a separate trip for.
Where a Negroni costs £5
- Café 1001, Brick Lane: £5 Negronis for the whole month, with a Saturday DJ series taking in Nina Yamada, Alexander Nut, Zaffa, miche and Mari* & Hutch
- The Shaston Arms, Soho: £5 Negronis with free Perelló olives every Sunday, and a closing party on 27 September
- Hawksmoor, London-wide: £5 Negroni happy hour, 4pm to 5pm Monday to Friday. Its Sour Cherry Negroni, which has apparently sold over half a million, is £10
- Next Door Records Two, Stoke Newington: £8 Negronis with Lardo bar snacks and Saturday DJ sessions
The two dates to actually diarise
Saturday 19 September is the Campari and Perelló aperitivo day party at Bar Brasso in Nine Elms, running 2pm to midnight, with a headline set from Owen Cutts and free food from Robin Gill of Darby’s. There is merch being given away, which at these things tends to go in the first hour.
20 and 21 September brings the better story: Bar Mauro, the retro Milanese lounge in Mexico City currently sitting at 54 in the World’s 50 Best Bars, takes over Equal Parts in Hackney for two nights. Guest shifts from bars of that rank do not come to Hackney often, and two nights is not long.
A Negroni that tastes like a margherita
The savoury turn is the genuinely odd part of this year. Fatto a Mano is serving The Queen Negroni across its pizzerias from 7 September to 18 October, built with olive oil-washed gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, fresh basil and upcycled tomato water from Vesuvius tomatoes, engineered to taste like a margherita pizza. It sounds like a dare and the ingredient list suggests it is not.
Less alarming and probably more drinkable, the dirty Negroni, spiked with Perelló olive brine, is on menus at Rita’s Soho, Bloodsports, Polpo, Sophie’s Soho and Equal Parts.
Free ones, if you have the right app
Young’s is giving away a Negroni through its On Tap app across the group, with eighteen sites running a five-twist Negroni menu that goes as far as stonefruit and coffee and chocolate. The Evolv Collection is doing the same for rewards members, with 5pm to 7pm happy hours at Coq d’Argent, Quaglino’s, Sartoria and Vinoteca.
The London x London Take: the passport is the bit worth organising around, because it turns a drinks promotion into a decent afternoon out and four of the six venues are places worth being in anyway. Do Lardo, Next Door Records Two and Equal Parts in one east London run, ideally on a Saturday when the DJs are on, then pick up Brick Lane and Soho separately. The Bar Mauro takeover is the single best thing on the list and it is two nights only, so treat that as the fixed point and build the rest around it. And if a pizza-flavoured cocktail sounds like a bad idea, so did the dirty martini once.
