The world’s largest surviving Victorian glasshouse is staying open until 10.30pm on Saturday 5 September for a two-channel silent disco, with DJ Goldierocks and DJ Sugai. Over-18s only, and garden entry isn’t included.
The Temperate House is the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse in the world, home to some of the rarest plants on the planet, and it usually closes when the gardens do. For one night in September it stays open until half ten with a bar in it and several hundred people dancing in headphones.
It runs 7pm to 10.30pm on Saturday 5 September, with entry through the Temperate House Gate on Kew Road, between Lion Gate and Victoria Gate.
How it works
Two channels, two DJs. Goldierocks on one, Sugai on the other, and you switch between them on the headset. Kew’s press office has confirmed to us that the two channels are split by genre rather than running the same set, but hasn’t said which genre sits where, so that is a decide-on-the-night situation.
A bar and food are running throughout. It’s over-18s only, which is unusual for Kew and tells you what kind of evening they have in mind.
What it costs
Tickets are £27.50 for Kew members and £35.20 for everyone else, booked through Fever. One thing to read carefully before you buy: garden entry is not included. This is a ticket to the Temperate House for the evening, not a run of the gardens, so don’t turn up at six expecting a wander round the Palm House first.
The London x London Take: silent discos in unusual buildings are a well-worn format by now, and most of them are held somewhere that could just as easily be a warehouse. This one isn’t. The Temperate House is a genuinely extraordinary room, 4,880 square metres of Victorian glass and ironwork with 10,000 plants in it, and being in there after dark is the entire point. Buy on that basis rather than for the DJs and you’ll have a much better night.
