Free outdoor cinema is back on the Thames, with Jaws and Hamlet joining the Summer by the River line-up

Free outdoor cinema is back at London Bridge City’s Summer by the River, with deckchairs, riverside views and a run of screenings from How to Train Your Dragon to Jaws.

Summer by the River, London Bridge City’s riverside festival set between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, runs until 27 September, and one of its best-value draws is the free outdoor cinema at The Clubhouse. The pop-up, styled like a classic English sports club and looking straight out over the Thames towards Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast, has been screening family-friendly films from 7pm, and there’s a fresh run of dates through late August and into September.

What’s showing

The line-up mixes big family favourites with a couple of more grown-up picks:

  • Tuesday 18 August – How to Train Your Dragon
  • Wednesday 19 August – Burlesque
  • Tuesday 25 August – The Karate Kid (2010)
  • Tuesday 1 September – Jaws
  • Tuesday 8 September – National Theatre Live: Hamlet

Screenings start at 7pm and entry is free, with The Clubhouse running on a primarily walk-in basis, so it’s worth turning up with a bit of time to spare to grab a seat. Tuesday and Friday evenings also double up as ‘Club Pravha’, with after-work drinks offers running before the films start.

The Clubhouse

Beyond the screenings, The Clubhouse is worth lingering at in its own right: think pizza, strawberries and cream, ice cream and drinks from Aperol, Pravha, Jascots and Britvic, all served from a relaxed riverside setting. It’s part of a wider summer programme at London Bridge City that also includes live music, big-screen sport and a riverside padel pop-up at Hay’s Galleria.

The London x London Take: this is about as easy as free summer entertainment gets, no ticket to book, no seat to reserve, just turn up with a jumper for later in the evening and you’ve got a cinema screen looking out over Tower Bridge. Jaws on 1 September is the pick of the bunch if you can only make one.
