Summer Splash returns to Royal Victoria Dock from 24 July to 17 August as part of the wider At the Docks summer programme, and it remains one of the most genuinely good free things to do in London in the summer months. The dock itself is London’s largest body of usable open water, and the views from the waterside: Canary Wharf’s glass towers to the north, the cable car crossing overhead, the industrial drama of the docklands setting, make it a genuinely distinctive place to spend an afternoon.
The lido is fully lifeguarded throughout and runs alongside a programme of sandpit play areas, deckchairs, children’s craft and family activities. It’s deliberately designed to give people without access to private outdoor space a safe and free place to enjoy the water, and it does that job well. Which is also why it gets busy: go on a weekday if you can.
At the Docks
Summer Splash sits within the broader At the Docks season, which runs until 13 September and brings over 150 activities to the Royal Docks waterfront. The wider programme includes the T100 Triathlon, Formula E London E-Prix, the Ensemble Festival of free outdoor arts, and the London Dragon Boat Festival, so there’s ample reason to make more than one trip out east this summer.
Getting there is genuinely easy now. Custom House and Royal Victoria stations on the Elizabeth line put the Royal Docks within minutes of central London. The Mayor’s Weekend Hopper fare also offers unlimited all-day bus travel for £1.75 on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the school holidays from 25 July to 31 August.
The London x London Take: Summer Splash is one of those free London experiences that punches considerably above its weight. A lifeguarded open-water swim in the Royal Docks with a Canary Wharf skyline view, for nothing, on a hot August afternoon, is a very good way to spend a day.
