The Ronnie Scott’s Street Party returns to Soho, with Blue Lab Beats, Daniel Casimir Big Band, Guvna B and ten acts across two outdoor stages.
There are few better ways to spend a Saturday in August than standing on a closed Soho street listening to a Grammy Award-winning jazz duo play for free. Ronnie Scott’s Street Party returns to Frith Street on 1 August, and this year’s lineup is the strongest they’ve put together.
Two outdoor stages run from 11.30am to 4.30pm, with DJs Jon Jules and Mike Vitti keeping the music going between sets. The whole thing is free, no tickets required, and presented this year in partnership with Music Venue Trust and Save Our Scene as a celebration of the grassroots venues that give artists their first stages.
South Stage
Jackson Mathod opens proceedings at 11.30am with his vibrant fusion of jazz, Afrobeat, funk and Latin influences: a joyous way to start the day. GRAMN., the East London collective fusing soul, hip hop and alternative R&B, follow with heavy grooves and infectious energy. NEONE the Wonderer brings jazz, grime and neo-soul together in a genuinely distinctive live show built around storytelling and vulnerability.
Summer Pearl, who has performed at Montreux Jazz Festival and SXSW, closes with the kind of emotionally honest soul and jazz performance that earns a devoted following. And headlining the South Stage: Blue Lab Beats, the Grammy Award-winning duo at the forefront of the UK’s contemporary jazz scene, blending jazz, hip hop, soul and electronic music into a full-band live show that tends to be the highlight of whichever festival they play.
North Stage
Marlon the Pannist, the first steelpan player to graduate from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, opens with Caribbean traditions meeting modern jazz. Ronnie Scott’s Gospel Choir, led by Daniel Thomas, brings soaring harmonies, soulful favourites and the kind of energy that makes Frith Street feel rather different from a normal Saturday. Shae Universe, MOBO-nominated and building rapidly toward something bigger, brings rich vocals, neo-soul and jazz influences. Guvna B, triple MOBO Award-winner, closes with his unique blend of hip hop, jazz and gospel-rooted soul: uplifting, thought-provoking and exceptionally well-played.
Headlining the North Stage: Daniel Casimir Big Band, led by the bassist and composer who is one of the defining figures of the new UK jazz movement, performing original compositions that combine orchestral ambition with contemporary jazz.
The London x London Take: Ronnie Scott’s Street Party has become one of the better free music events in London’s summer calendar, and this year’s lineup justifies the trip to Soho on its own. Blue Lab Beats and Daniel Casimir Big Band headlining simultaneously is the kind of programming decision that shouldn’t work and absolutely does. Turn up early, bring something to sit on if you can, and stay for the whole thing.
