London’s internet-ordered eclipse glasses have mostly sold out, but Wednesday’s moon is not waiting for a late Amazon order, and a couple of Greenwich institutions are still handing certified pairs over the counter.
Where can you still buy glasses in person?
The National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory Greenwich are selling ISO 12312-2 certified glasses over the counter tomorrow (Tuesday 11 August) and on eclipse day itself (Wednesday 12 August), capped at five pairs per person. The two sit a few minutes apart in Greenwich Park, which is also one of the better-placed spots in the city to watch the eclipse when it comes.
What if they sell out?
Jessops branches across London have been stocking certified glasses too, though supplies are limited and worth a phone call before you make a special trip. Failing that, a few eclipse viewing parties supply certified glasses on arrival – Horizon 22 and Kioku by Endo among them – which makes them a decent plan B if the shops run dry.
The London x London Take: If you are anywhere near southeast London, those two museums are the obvious move, but a five-per-person cap two days out is exactly the recipe for a queue, so go early. Anywhere else, ring your nearest Jessops before you trek across town, and treat any pair without an ISO 12312-2 stamp as no pair at all.
