Marrone opens on 8 August in Soho, with tiramisu that has been honed to perfection.
London has excellent Italian food. It has reasonable tiramisu. What it has lacked, until now, is anyone obsessing over tiramisu specifically in the way that the city’s best coffee shops obsess over single-origin beans or its best burger restaurants obsess over the grind. Marrone is going to fix that.
The brand was founded by Giancarlo Fanigliulo after years of travelling between London and Italy and finding the gap between the best tiramisu he’d eaten and the average version everywhere else to be, frankly, unacceptable. The response was to build something dedicated entirely to doing one thing exceptionally well.
The obsession is evident in the details. The pistachios are DOP Bronte, sourced from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, where the unique soil produces a pistachio with a flavour and colour that makes other varieties taste like an approximation of the real thing. The chocolate is Valrhona. The jars are custom-designed reusable glass, with lids that took over six months to develop. These are not the kinds of details that a brand cutting corners tends to share.
Marrone launches with three flavours: Original, DOP Pistachio and Valrhona Dark Chocolate with Maldon Sea Salt, with seasonal specials to follow. The combination of Valrhona chocolate and Maldon salt in particular sounds like the kind of thing that ends the conversation about which one to order.
The location is well chosen. Sherwood Street sits just off Piccadilly Circus, deep in Soho, surrounded by the kind of food culture that will appreciate what Marrone is doing. The nearest competition is probably wherever you last had a disappointing tiramisu, which is most places.
The London x London Take: The specialist dessert shop is a format London has been slow to take seriously, and tiramisu specifically has been underserved. Marrone has the ingredients pedigree and the design sensibility to be the one that changes that. We’ll be going in week one.
