Sagra di Shoreditch lands on Saturday 15 August with a four-course feast from Gloria, Kricket and Blacklock, free-flowing Italian wine, Tombola and live music. All profits go to The Felix Project and Shoreditch Trust’s Community Table.
Big Mamma’s Gloria is throwing a party in one of East London’s loveliest secret gardens, and it’s raising money for two of London’s best food charities while doing it. Sagra di Shoreditch, a 300-person Italian street festival inspired by Italy’s beloved Ferragosto summer celebrations, takes over the Museum of the Home’s Kingsland Lawns on Saturday 15 August from 12.30pm to 5.30pm.
The format is a communal long table stretched across the gardens, which is exactly the right way to do this sort of thing.
Four courses, five hours, Italian wine flowing throughout from Luca and Passione Vino, live entertainment, a giant Tombola and 100% of profits going to The Felix Project and Shoreditch Trust’s Community Table.
The food
The menu is where this gets genuinely interesting, because it’s not a single kitchen but four of the area’s best, each contributing a course.
Gloria opens with the kind of antipasti that makes you understand immediately what they’re doing: a 5kg Mozzarella di Bufala, XXL Burrata, Prosciutto Crudo di Parma and homemade focaccia. Kricket, the acclaimed modern Indian restaurant, contributes their signature spice-packed dishes as a second course, which is an unusual and very good decision for an Italian festival.
Gloria returns for a Pasta Fredda with yellow cherry tomatoes, courgette and Taggiasca olives. Blacklock closes with their famous white chocolate cheesecake, scooped tableside.
It is, on paper, an extraordinary meal.
The entertainment
Beyond the food, the afternoon includes live music, retro summer anthems, live performers, painting with Pinot & Picasso, a Photobook Cafe pop-up and a Tombola with prizes from local businesses including Legado, Masaj and Hart Shoreditch.
The Museum of the Home gardens provide the setting, which is a genuinely beautiful walled space that most people in Shoreditch have walked past for years without realising it exists.
The charity angle
All profits from the event are split between The Felix Project, which redistributes surplus food to communities across London, and Shoreditch Trust’s Community Table, which provides meals and connections for people experiencing food poverty and isolation locally. It’s not a token gesture: the entire commercial surplus from 300 tickets at £75 each goes directly to both organisations.
