The free rooftop beach on top of Centrale shopping centre returns 7 to 31 August, with a new adults-only Thursday evening series headlined by DJ Luck and MC Neat.
When it comes to taking the joke and make it real, Costa del Croydon knows the deal. Starting as an ironic t-shirt slogan in the 1970s, when Croydon’s Chamber of Commerce floated the idea of turning the town into a tourist resort and locals responded with the appropriate level of scepticism. Fast forward fifty years and there is, genuinely, a beach on a Croydon rooftop. It drew over 60,000 visitors in its first two summers, won a Gold Award for placemaking at the Solal Marketing Awards, and it’s back for a third year in August. South London, vindicated.
What it actually is

The rooftop of Centrale shopping centre gets transformed every August into a proper beach setup: sand, splash zones, hammocks, mini go-karts, trampolines, hook-a-duck, giant chess, connect four, dance workshops, and views across South London you won’t get anywhere else without paying for a building tour. Entry is free, with some paid activities sitting inside it, and tickets are released weekly with walk-up availability each day. It’s primarily aimed at families during the day, and it genuinely works: reviewers consistently flag the atmosphere and the sense that this is something Croydon has taken proper ownership of rather than a corporate activation dropped into the area.
New this year: The Beach Club
The 2026 addition is the one that changes the pitch significantly. Every Thursday evening in August from 5pm to 8pm, Costa Del Croydon becomes an adults-only Beach Club with a different theme each week, running from dancehall nights and garage DJ sets to drag-hosted lip sync battles and sip-and-paint sessions. UK garage legends DJ Luck and MC Neat headline the press launch on 6 August, which gives you a reasonable indication of the level of booking.
The combination of a free daytime family offer and a properly programmed adult evening series is a smart evolution for something that’s already proven the demand is there.
The London x London Take: This is exactly the kind of thing we think London does brilliantly when it lets itself: free, community-rooted, genuinely fun, and in a neighbourhood that deserves more (postive) attention than it gets. The Beach Club evenings are the new reason to go even if you’ve been before.
